The number of suicides in the Netherlands increased again last year, according to Statistics Netherlands. In 2016 a total of 1,894 people in the Netherlands took their own life, 25 more than in 2015. 

In relation to the number of residents in the Netherlands, the number of suicides has been stable for a few years. Since 2013 there's been 11 suicides per 100 thousand inhabitants each year, about equal to the European average. The increase in absolute numbers can therefore be attributed to population growth, according to Statistics Netherlands.

The number of job vacancies for young people is increasing rapidly in the Netherlands, especially for young people with vocational qualifications. Between September 2016 and February 2017 there were a total of 214 thousand vacancies at vocational level, according to a study by benefits agency UWV and the organization for cooperation between vocational education and the business world SBB, NU.nl reports.

The last quarter of 2016 had 26 percent more vocational vacancies than the same quarter in 2015.

Some 70 percent of adult Dutch are worried about a terrorist attack being committed in the Netherlands, according to a study published by Statistics Netherlands on Monday. Four in ten Dutch think there is a good chance of an attack in the Netherlands and 16 percent worry about an attack on a regular basis.

Despite these concerns, only 4 percent think it likely that they themselves will be the victim of an attack.

Unemployment in the Netherlands dropped by an average of 6 thousand people per month over the past three months, according to Statistics Netherlands. Youth unemployment in particular plummeted, dropping from 9.7 percent in February to 9 percent in May - the lowest level since March 2009.

Childhood obesity is continuing its steady increase in the Netherlands. Last year 13.4 percent of kids between the ages of 4 and 20 years were overweight, an 10 percent increase compared to 2015, AD reports based on figures from Statistics Netherlands.

The Dutch are generally very satisfied with their lives. When asked to score their lives out of ten, on average Dutch gave a score of 7.6 in 2016, Statistics Netherlands revealed on Wednesday. That is slightly higher than the average 7.5 of 2015. 

Netherlands residents gave their daily activities a score of 7.3, compared to 7.2 in 2015. And their social life got a score of 7.6. Physical health scored somewhat lower at 7.0, the same as in 2015. And psychiatric health scored higher at 7.8, stable for the past four years.

The number of cheese shops in Amsterdam increased massively over the past decade, according to figures from Statistics Netherlands. At the start of this year there were 55 cheese stores in the Dutch capital, an 80 percent increase compared to 2007. Nationwide the number of cheese stores increased 27 percent.

The average income of Dutch workers in their twenties decreased between 2004 and 2014, while the income of all workers increased over that period, Statistics Netherlands revealed on Tuesday. In that decade the average income of all Dutch workers increased from 24,900 euros to 26,100 euros. While the average income of workers in their 20s decreased from 23,900 euros to 23,100 euros, NU.nl reports.

The number of welfare recipients in the Netherlands increased to 474 thousand in the first quarter of this year, Statistics Netherlands announced on Wednesday. That is 15 thousand more welfare recipients than the same quarter last year. According to the stats office, the increase can mainly be attributed to refugees who haven't been able to find a job.

Half of the people living in the Netherlands are overweight or obese, according to the newest health monitor by Statistics Netherlands, and health institutes RIVM and GGD. Among people over the age of 65, two thirds are too heavy, De Stenter reports.

People with a body mass index (bmi) of 25 or more are considered overweight. People with a bmi of 30 or more are considered obese. 14 percent of adults in the Netherlands are obese.

Netherlands residents have slightly more confidence in each other and the authorities, such as the police and judiciary, according to figures Statistics Netherlands released on Monday. Data from 2015-2016 shows that 60 percent of Dutch older than 15 trust their fellow human beings. That is 2 percent more than the 58 percent who trusted the rest of society in the period 2012 to 2014. A clear majority of 70 percent of Dutch have confidence in the police and judiciary.

Last year the Dutch labor market was recovered from the economic crisis in many aspects, though labor participation was still lower than in 2008 before the outbreak of the crisis, according to figures Statistics Netherlands released on Wednesday. In 2016 the number of unemployed people was still 1.5 times higher than in 2008, the number of people in long-term unemployment was over twice as high.

Some 1.7 million people currently living in the Netherlands, were alive to witness the liberation of the country at the end of World War II in 1945, according to figures from Statistics Netherlands. That amounts to 10.4 percent of the Netherlands population.

Laren has relatively the most residents who were alive to see the WWII liberation, with 19.5 percent of its population. Bergen in Noord-Holland follows with 17.7 percent, and Roosendaal with 17 percent.

Energy consumption in the Netherlands increased by 2 percent in 2016 compared to 2015, according to figures Statistics Netherlands released on Friday. The use of natural gas saw the biggest increase, mostly due the colder winter than in 2015, according to the stats office.

Almost 11 percent of children in the Netherlands were receiving treatment from youth support last year, Statistics Netherlands announced on Friday. Youth support helps and treats kids below the age of 18 who have psychological problems, mental disorders or educational problems.

Last year the Dutch government made 2.4 billion euros from natural gas extraction - almost 3 billion euros less than in 2015 and the lowest level since 1975, according to figures released by Statistics Netherlands on Wednesday. 

The decrease can partly be attributed to decreased gas extraction due to the risk of earthquakes, according to the statistics office. Lower gas prices also played a role - last year the producer prices were halved compared to 2013.

All Dutch provinces except Groningen saw economic growth last year, according to figures Statistics Netherlands released on Tuesday. Of the four large Dutch cities, Amsterdam saw the biggest growth at 3 percent, The Hague the lowest at 2.2 percent. Rotterdam had the highest unemployment rate in the Netherlands last year at 11.3 percent, far above the national unemployment rate of around 6 percent.

Housing prices in the Netherlands continue to rise. In March housing prices were 7.3 percent higher than in the same month in 2016 - the biggest price increase in 15 years, according to figures released by Statistics Netherlands and the Land Registry on Friday. 

The current price level is still 8.6 percent below the housing prices peak of 2008, but 16.4 percent above the low point in 2013. The average house price is currently at the same level as in April 2006.

Unemployment in the Netherlands dropped by an average of 6 thousand people per month during the first three months of this year, according to figures released by Statistics Netherlands. In March a total of 463 thousand people in the Netherlands were unemployed, 5.1 percent of the working population. In March last year, there were 574 thousand unemployed.

The number of people with paid work increased by an average of 14 thousand per month over the past three months. At the end of March benefits agency UWV was paying 415 thousand unemployment benefits, a decrease of 0.3 percent.

The statistics office questioned people from common professions in the Netherlands - professions with at least 50 thousand employees - about the amount of work they do and the speed at which they do it.
