This is a joint action from the Dutch and Belgian authorities, a spokesperson for the Dutch Public Prosecutor said to the Telegraaf, though she would not say exactly where the raids are done.

Dutch food and consumer product safety authority NVWA denies that it first learned that eggs were maybe contaminated by toxic fipronil in November last year. The authority did receive a report about fipronil in that month, but that report only stated that it had been used to clean stables - there was no reason to believe that it could end up in eggs and pose a potential health risk, inspector general Rob van Lint said on Wednesday, RTL Nieuws reports.

Dutch food and consumer product safety authority NVWA decided to test chicken meat for after all. Admin from company ChickFriend showed that the company used the toxic insecticide at a number of meat companies too, AD reports. 

ChickFriend is considered the source of the fipronil contamination in the Netherlands.

Foods that contain contaminated eggs are safe to eat, according to the federation of the Dutch foodstuffs industry FNLI based on its own research, NU.nl reports.

"That is a terrible and unnecessary statement", Eric Huber, chairman of the poultry farm department, said to Radio 1 Journaal on Wednesday. "It leads to unnecessary unrest among consumers."

Dutch food and consumer product safety authority NVWA issued a warning to consumers not to eat eggs with the company code X-NL-40155XX. The content of toxic fipronil in these eggs is so high that they pose an acute danger to public health, the NVWA said, NU.nl reports.

The Xs in the code represent numbers. The code will be stamped on the egg. The NVWA is recalling the affected eggs from the shelves, but consumers who already bought eggs with this code are advised to throw them away.

A 3-year-old boy was critically injured when he somehow got stuck under a cart on a fairground attraction at the Tilburg fair on Saturday. He is now in a stable condition and out of danger, alderman Erik de Ridder of the municipality of Tilburg said, Brabants Dagblad reports.

It took rescue workers almost an hour to free the boy. He was rushed to a hospital, where he was treated.

Food products imported from the United States and sold in Dutch stores often don't comply with European laws and regulation, Foodwatch announced after investigating 86 such products sold by Albert Heijn, Jumbo and Jamin, among others.

According to the watchdog, none of the products fully complied with EU laws. "We already suspected that there are problems in the supervision on these types of American import products, but that not one product from a sample of over 80 products fully complied with European regulation is really scary", Foodwatch said in a statement.

Customs officers intercepted 60 red flamingos at Schiphol airport. One was dead and three were in a bad state, ANP reports.

The flamingos were being transported from Cuba to China.

All of the birds were seized and taken to an animal hospital for care, a spokesperson for the Dutch food and consumer product authority NVWA said on Friday. The animals were injured in the poor transport conditions.

The inside of the cases weren't sealed properly, resulting in some of the flamingos getting their feet stuck in vent holes.

Dutch food safety authority NVWA placed a total of 129 restaurants in the Netherlands under increased supervision between November 2015 and December 2016. This happens when a restaurant gets at least three fines, one of which for poor hygiene standards or rotten food, in a period of two years. Over 30 of the affected restaurants are located in Amsterdam, RTL Nieuws reports based on data received from NVWA after appealing to the freedom of information act.

Economic Affairs State Secretary Martijn van Dam and slaughterhouses in the Netherlands came to an agreement on voluntary camera supervision to monitor against animal abuse. The cameras will make sure that there is a good view on all actions involving living animals. "You must be able to see every step in the process", Van Dam said to broadcaster NOS.

The Dutch food and consumer product safety authority NVWA and Customs arrested a Chinese couple on Easter Monday for trying to smuggle 72 kilograms of live eels through Schiphol to China, the NVWA announced. The European eels were found in 36 plastic bags that were filled with water and hidden in six regular suitcases. 

According to the NVWA, the eels have a street value of around 115 thousand euros in China. An official report was filed against the Chinese couple and they will have to appear in court in July.

An extra strap prevented her from falling. A video of the incident shows the woman dangling loose in her seat, screaming.

The Dutch food and consumer product safety authority NVWA issued 20 percent more fines in 2016 than in 2015 for violation of various consumer laws. These included violation of the Commodities Act, the Tobacco Act, Medicines Act and the Act for the protection of plants and animals, ANP reports.

The NVWA attributes the increase to stricter inspections and letting fewer culprits go with a warning. In total the NVWA 7,766 fines. This included things like selling products you aren't allowed to, giving false information and the like.

There is no sign of bird flu on a chicken farm in Biddinghuizen, Felvoland, the Dutch food and consumer product safety authority NVWA announced on Monday. Some 21 thousand chickens on the farm were preventatively killed last week after bird flu was found at a nearby meat duck business, the Telegraaf reports.

The NVWA checked a total of nine farms in the area, but found no sign of bird flu. The bird flu found at the duck farm was the infectious variant H5N8.
