The mental healthcare sector in the Netherlands is struggling to find enough qualified staff, according to an annual survey of the sector by Intrakoop and accountant Verstegen. The total number of vacancies in the sector grew by a massive 28.5 percent last year to 5,151, newspaper AD reports. 

Almost a thousand of the vacancies were difficult to fill, according to the report. The total 186 mental healthcare organizations in the Netherlands are good for around 64 thousand full-time jobs, the researchers estimate.

About 1,500 psychiatrists working at 41 mental health institutions went on strike on Tuesday in protest against their pension plans. They want their employers to pay the employer's contribution to their pension plans, which they've been withholding for two years, ANP reports.

For the strike the psychiatrists worked on a weekend schedule on Tuesday, only giving emergency treatments. All regular treatments and sessions were canceled. According to the psychiatrists, this was the first time they took action against their employers. They felt they have no other choice.

Nearly half of the people suffering from mental health problems in the Netherlands do not make use of medicine or health care, according to a survey by the national platform for mental health GGz and the Dutch federation for patients Ieder(in) published on Monday. The survey among more than 10 thousand patients found that high costs is the main reason for patients to avoid being treated, Trouw reports.

This survey reveals a sharp contrast between mental health care and physical health care - about a third of people with physical health problems don't go for treatment.

Human remains were discovered during demolition works at mental health institution Vrederust in Halsteren. It is as yet unclear whether the person was murdered or died of natural causes, a police spokesperson said to Dutch newspaper AD.

A team from the Dutch national platform of mental healthcare, the GGZ, has set up a task force to help municipalities make sure that people with serious mental health problems get the help they need. This task force launched earlier this week and is paid for by the Ministry of Public Health.

A 27-year old patient from the Vrederust psychiatric clinic in Halsteren has received a prison sentence of 4 years, as well as involuntary psychiatric treatment. The court in Breda convicted Mark L. on Monday for killing another patient in the clinic in October last year.
