Emergency services in the Netherlands seem to be confused about the term "disturbed person", which results in confusion about the extent of the problem in the country. Due to a change in the police's recording system, the term turned into a collection name for anything that strays from normal, the Volkskrant reports based on conversations with mental health researcher Bauke Koekkoek, GGZ Nederland, the police and the team for people with disturbed behavior.

Emergency services in Almere responded en masse on Monday to rescue a seemingly mentally disturbed man who fell through the ice after walking a long distance on a lake in Almere Stad. Divers from the fire department pulled him from the water, the Telegraaf reports.

Eye witnesses told th newspaper that the man walked a long distance on the ice. When police officers called to him to come back to shore, he refused. The fire department and an air ambulance were called in.

The municipality of Amsterdam is investigating whether a third death can be attributed to a massive power outage that hit the city and its surrounds on Tuesday. The family of a 75-year-old woman had to wait online for almost 10 minutes when calling emergency number 112 when the elderly woman became ill on Tuesday, AT5 reports.

A 35-year-old skater in Amsterdam had to be rescued by emergency services after he fall trough the ice on Plesmalaan in Nieuw West. The man was taken to the hospital, hypothermic but conscious and lucid, Het Parool reports.

Two passersby noticed the man around 9:00 p.m. and called the emergency services. The man was only a few meters from the edge and rescuers could get him to the side quickly.

One person was killed and another was badly injured Wednesday morning in an accident with a freight elevator in the Willemswerf building on Boompjes in Rotterdam. The lift is believed to have plummeted several stories with the two people inside, AD reports.

The elevator came to a standstill between the 18th and 17th floors shortly after 9 a.m. The two victims were stuck in it for some time. Emergency services struggled to free them, but eventually managed. Both were rushed to the Erasmus MC hospital by 10 a.m., and first reports of the fatality were revealed a half hour later.

A massive power outage in Amsterdam and surrounds on Tuesday morning may have cost the lives of two elderly Amsterdam residents, the municipality said. One may have died because the emergency line could not be reached and the other because her oxygen supply cut out when the power went out, the Telegraaf reports.

The Dutch police took tweets in which a police chief criticized Security and Justice Minister Ard van der Steur offline on Sunday, a spokesperson for the Hague police said to AD. In the tweet the police chief reacted with annoyance to Van der Steur calling violence against emergency services personnel "unacceptable".

The Netherlands' entered 2017 without any major problems. There were a number minor clashes between police and party goers, but not massive incidents. Emergency services throughout the country had to deal with young people pelting fireworks at them during the course of their duties. 

A police officer in The Hague was seriously injured after being hit by a car. But according to the police, this was an accident - there is no sign of intent, according to the Volkskrant.

A train hit several pedestrians at a crossing in Nijmegen on Monday morning. Two people were killed, according to the police. 

It is currently still unclear what exactly happened - whether this was an accident or a planned action, AD reports. No cars were involved, only the train and several pedestrians, a spokesperson for the police said to the newspaper.

Emergency services are at the scene. Traffic over the S100 is being diverted. The municipality also closed several streets around the scene of the accident.

Strong tremors resulted in 24 homes on Allard Piersonstraat in Rotterdam's Delfshaven being evacuated as a precaution on Thursday afternoon. Residents were locked out of their homes for hours before being allowed to return late in the evening. Investigation found "nothing alarming", a spokesperson for the safety office said, AD reports.

Emergency services responded en masse. The street was closed down. Some 40 people residents were given shelter in a nearby mosque. Others stayed with neighbors. No one was injured.

The police are investigating the death of a baby in an apartment on Parallelweg in Cuijk on Tuesday night. The baby became unwell while emergency services were in the home helping the mother. Attempts to resuscitate the child were to no avail, AD reports. 

The mother was taken to hospital by ambulance. Exactly why she called for help is unclear. Her condition is also unknown.
