While State Secretary of Security and Justice in the Rutte II cabinet, Fred Teeven (VVD) implemented budget cuts on legal aid after he realized that the PvdA would not make criminal stricter and implement minimum punishments, weekly newspaper De Groene Amsterdammer reports. "It's another way to achieve the same effect", the newspaper quotes him. Lawyers in the Netherlands are furious.

More than 6,100 suspects have bee wrongfully detained in the Netherlands over the past year, for which they got more than 11 million euros in damages. If other compensations such as legal fees, travel expenses and loss of income are included, these wrongfully imprisoned people cost the government about 28.8 million euros - that is excluding the average of 250 euros per day it costs to detain someone

According the lawyer Geert-Jan Knoops, the High Security Prison in Vught violates a lawyer's fundamental right to unimpeded access to their client. The prison also violates the right to a fair trial by eavesdropping on conversations of experts called in by a lawyer in the preparation of a criminal case.

Internet providers and telecom companies no longer have to store communications data, the court ruled today, stating that the importance of privacy outweighs the need for the information, NOS reports. The judge scrapped the law that obliges companies to do so.
