The Netherlands may test digitizing some steps in the voting process for voters abroad in future elections. Hague mayor Pauline Krikke wants to adapt the election act so that voters living abroad can receive their voting card digitally, instead of by post. She wants the elections to be less dependent on other countries' postal systems, NOS reports.

"In some countries, it's no exception that a mail bag will lie in a post office for a few weeks", Krikke said. The Hague is in charge of arranging the elections for Dutch people abroad.

Government sites DigiD and MijnOverheid.nl are currently unavailable due to a technical fault. The sites went offline just before noon, NU.nl reports.

If you try logging into DigiD you are met with a message saying that DigiD is currently unavailable due to a fault. The same message can be seen on DigiD's Twitter feed. Logging into MijnOverheid.nl is also impossible, and there are problems with logging into the sites of the Tax Authorities, DUO and benefits agency UWV.

Complaint site Allestoringen.nl received hundreds of complaints, according to NOS.

A 38 year old Nigerian man has been sentenced to 3 years in prison by the court in The Hague for phishing - sending emails purporting to be from banks or companies in order to get individuals' personal information, such as login information.

Several websites were unreachable throughout Tuesday due to a fault at the hosting provider Prolocation. Unreachable websites include both the government's Dutch and English sites, Rijksoverheijd.nl and Government.nl, Dutch blog site GeenStijl.nl and telecommunication firm Telfort's site.

Cyber criminals could get access to people's DigiD login information through expired internet domains that were once registered to the police. This finding comes from research done by Reporter Radio in collaboration with security researcher Wouter Slotboom.

The police are working on making a report over the internet easier. One of the improvements is that during the course of 2015, citizens who want to report a crime over the internet will be able to log in with DigiD.

Police arrested three more suspects today in the ongoing investigation of the DigiD fraud in Groningen. The first reports came in in June 2013, and in November police arrested 5 suspects who were identified by an alert witness.

The identities of as many as 150 people were stolen by hackers exploiting a security vulnerability in a government-backed online identification system. Each victim's' identity was stolen through the DigiD programme, where bank account numbers may be changed to reroute money being sent for tax refunds and social benefits, a Ministry of the Interior spokesperson told NOS.

At least 54 Groningen students have fallen victim to identity theft through their DigdD account. So far the police arrested five suspects.

On Wednesday evening DigiD was once more the victim of a cyber attack. This was announced by the Ministry of Internal Affairs. According to the Ministry there is no sign of theft. Personal data have not been stolen and remain safe. 

It is the second attack on DigiD in two days. Earlier on Tuesday evening there was a so-called DDos attack, an attack in which large quantities of data are sent to the server making the server unreachable.
