The police are looking for witnesses to a shooting that left one man injured in an apartment building in Amstelveen on Wednesday morning. No arrests were made.

The shooting happened around 3:30 a.m. in the Ararat apartment building on In de Wolken in the Groenelaan neighborhood, according to RTV Amstelveen. The circumstances around the shooting are still unclear.

A trauma team responded to the scene and rushed the victim to hospital. The extent of his injuries was not revealed.

Investigators found the house where the man was held hostage on Spaarnestraat in Leiden, the police announced on Thursday. The house has been thoroughly searched and the police expect to make arrests soon, NU.nl reports.

A 50-year-old jeweler from Astelveen is suspected of staging a robbery at his jewelry store so that he could submit an insurance claim. The items claimed stolen from his jewelry store were insured for several million euros, ANP reports.

The jeweler was arrested last week on suspicion of fraud. He will stay in custody for at least the next two weeks, the court in Amsterdam ruled on Monday.

On Thursday afternoon a Rotterdam man was dragged out of his car in Amstelveen, pushed into another car and driven off by men in balaclavas. He was found wounded in the province of Zuid-Holland hours later, the police announced in a statement.

The police are hesitant about releasing information. "Everything we release, will be read by the other party too, so we have to be very careful. The investigation is in progress", a spokesperson said to AD. The victim has a criminal record. He received medical treatment for his injuries.

A meeting will be held in Amstelveen next week between city councilors and members from the Jewish- and Muslim communities in the city. The goal is to discuss the important issues for both groups in the run up to the parliamentary elections in March, Het Parool reports.

The meeting is organized by the Jewish Muslim Platform Amstelland, the Jewish-Islamic organization Mo&Moos and the Jewish Bendigamos. Amstelveen councilors of the VVD, PvdA, D66, SP, ChristenUnie, CDA and GroenLinks will attend.

The idea behind this is that Amsterdam moms sent to Amstelveen to give birth, can still register their child as born in Amsterdam, Ida Zwaan of the Woman & Child Center said on Tuesday, NU.nl reports.

According to Zwaan, increasingly many Amsterdam women are forced to give birth in Amstelveen because Amsterdam hospitals are too full. And many of them find it difficult to register their child as born in Amstelveen instead of their home city.

An 87-year-old, wheelchair bound woman was hit by a car while she was crossing the street at a zebra crossing on Groenelaan in Amstelveen on Sunday afternoon. She died of her injuries in hospital on Sunday night, the police announced.

The accident happened around 2:30 p.m. on Groenelaan at the crossing with Aplen Rondweg. 

According to the police, the 79-year-old driver that hit the woman was not speeding. "Possibly the bright sun had an impact on the visibility of the driver of the car." the police write in a statement.

A Connexxion bus driver in Amstelveen told a family of color to get off the bus to make room for "real Dutch people" on Thursday, a man who was on the bus wrote on Twitter, according to RTV Amstelveen.

The incident happened around 6:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Amstelveen bus station. The tweets led to outrage online and were eventually removed.

Amstelveen mayor Mirjam van 't Veld says she refuses to back down from plans to receive asylum seekers in the Amsterdam suburb despite a specific death threat made against her. She would not comment on the context of the threat in an interview with newspaper Het Parool, but she said it was typed on half of an A4-sized sheet of paper and addressed to her personally.
