A golden jackal was seen in Veluwe on February 19th, the first such animal ever to be spotted in the Netherlands. The golden jackal was "accidentally" recorded by a camera trap during a study into ungulates by Alterra and the Wageningen University, the university announced.

There is good news and bad news regarding the otter population in the Netherlands. The good news is that the number of otters is increasing, there are currently about 140 otters in the Netherlands. The bad news is that the genetic variation of the animals is lacking due to inbreeding.

The Natural History Museum in Rotterdam has expressed its wish to exhibit the wild boars that were shot dead by a hunter last week. The hunter himself is the rightful owner of the cadavers, and will have to make the call whether the museum can buy the boars or not, the Algemeen Dagblad reports.
