The number of job vacancies for young people is increasing rapidly in the Netherlands, especially for young people with vocational qualifications. Between September 2016 and February 2017 there were a total of 214 thousand vacancies at vocational level, according to a study by benefits agency UWV and the organization for cooperation between vocational education and the business world SBB, NU.nl reports.

The last quarter of 2016 had 26 percent more vocational vacancies than the same quarter in 2015.

The Dutch police issued a warning about a scam in which fake Microsoft employees gain access to their victims' computers by telling them they want to help them solve a problem. Over 2016 and in the first half of this year no less than 1,900 Dutch fell victim to this scam, losing hundreds of thousands of euros in total. "If you are called by a Microsoft employee: hang up immediately!" the police warn.

A 28-year-old man was arrested in Heerlen on Wednesday afternoon as part of an investigation into terrorism.

Why the man was arrested is unclear. A spokesperson for the Public Prosecutor told newspaper AD that he is not currently suspected committing or preparing for a terrorist action. The spokesperson would say nothing else.

The suspect will be arraigned in the next few days.

The Public Prosecutor demanded 200 hours of community service against two Amsterdam lawyers suspected of bribing a police volunteer, NOS reports.

According to the Prosecutor, the lawyers paid the woman to give them confidential police information between 2010 and 2012. In doing so they damaged their occupational group and undermined the trust civilians have in lawyers, the Prosecutor said.

An 18-year-old suspected terrorist arrested in Utrecht last week is not dangerous, according to his lawyer. The boy is a disturbed gamer, whose gotten "himself in a tricky position", lawyer Luis de Leon said, according to NOS.

"We are talking about a computer nerd that became entangled in the world of games and chat boxes. He has no affinity with ISIS, is not Muslim and is not radicalized. There is no harm in him." the lawyer said to the Volkskrant. "He does not even speak Arabic."

The police are still struggling to identify a man found murdered in Roosendaal last week. Photos of the victim were therefore released in the hopes information from the public may help find this man's identity.

The man's on Turfvaartsestraat last week Wednesday. An autopsy on his body on Friday revealed that he was murdered.

The Ministry of Security and Justice confirmed that the photos were taken in the institution, but added that they were taken in 2014, before the asylum crisis, Omroep Gelderland reports.

Telecom provider KPN and the foundation for safe traffic in the Netherlands VVN teamed up to invent a smart bicycle lock. The lock is not only an anti-theft measure - it can only be unlocked with a smartphone app - but also prevents cyclists from using their smartphones while cycling. If the bike is unlocked, the phone's network connection is disconnected, NU.nl reports.

The Netherlands performed exceptionally well in both the World and Europe University Rankings 2017, according to Times Higher Education. All 13 of the Netherlands' main research intensive universities made the top 100 of the Europe ranking and top 200 in the World ranking. 

The Netherlands outpaced the European average when it came to research reputation, citation impact and research productivity, as well as income measures to academic staff.

From September 6th NS and ProRail will perform tests in running six trains per hour between Amsterdam, Utrecht and Eindhoven. For 14 Wednesdays a train will leave on this route every 10 minutes. If these tests go according to plan, there will be six trains per hour on this route every day from the start of the new timetable in December, NOS reports.

Dutch companies, government institutions and citizens are not responding fast enough against growing digital threats, according to National Coordinator for Counterterrorism and Security Dick Schoof. At home and at work Dutch people often opt for the fastest solution, instead of the most secure one. Which means that the gap between threats and security measures is getting larger instead of smaller, Schoof said in the Netherlands Cyber Security Image 2017, ANP reports.

Police officers in Rotterdam, Amersfoort in Zwolle participating in an experiment in arming police officers with tasers, are satisfied with the weapon in general. Since the experiment was launched in February, the nearly 300 officers armed with electric shock weapons used the tasers on suspects 34 times and threatened them with it another 78 times, the police said in a statement on Tuesday.
