Unemployment in the Netherlands dropped by an average of 6 thousand people per month during the first three months of this year, according to figures released by Statistics Netherlands. In March a total of 463 thousand people in the Netherlands were unemployed, 5.1 percent of the working population. In March last year, there were 574 thousand unemployed.

The number of people with paid work increased by an average of 14 thousand per month over the past three months. At the end of March benefits agency UWV was paying 415 thousand unemployment benefits, a decrease of 0.3 percent.

D66 leader Alexander Pechtold hopes that by the end of today's government formation negotiations - the last session before the May recess - there will be more clarity on the status of forming a government between the VVD, CDA, D66 and GroenLinks, he said before entering the talks on Thursday, NU.nl reports.

"We should get an idea today about where we stand", Pechtold said. "This past week was important and useful. Sometimes very tough, but still with good steps."

The Public Prosecutor must investigate whether NAM was guilty of damaging housing, possibly creating life threatening situations, in the gas extraction area in Groningen, the Arnhem-Leeuwarden court ruled on Thursday, NOS reports.

The case was filed by the Groninger Bodem Beweging (GBB) an a number of individuals from the gas extraction area. The Groningen residents say they are dealing with, in some cases severe, damage to their homes caused by earthquakes that resulted from years of gas extraction.

One person was killed and another injured in a fire in a building in Venlo on Thursday afternoon, the Limburg-Noord fire department said on Twitter.

According to local safety office Veiligheidsregio Limburg-Noord, the fire started on the second floor of care institute Via Cresceno. Emergency services started evacuating the building around 12:00 p.m. 

The fire department has the fire under control. It is unclear how it started.

The Dutch police don't do enough to find "small-time" fugitive criminals, according to a study commissioned by Police and Science. Fugitives guilty of serious crime are actively sought, but hardly anything is done to find three quarters of the 11 thousand fugitives in the Netherlands, the researchers conclude. Most of these fugitives have to serve a sentence of 2 months or less, NOS reports.

A woman was stabbed in a home on Van der Nootstraat in Oss on Wednesday. The extent of the victim's injuries is unclear, but she was hospitalized. Her son was arrested, the Oost-Brabant police said on Twitter. 

"What exactly happened in the house is currently not clear, we are busy with the investigation", a police spokesperson said to Omroep Brabant. He added that the victim's condition is not life-threatening.

The son is in custody for further investigation.

A call for eyewitnesses of a liberation plane landing in Amsterdam on May 5th, 1945 produced rare video footage of the actual plane. The 47 second long video was submitted by Els Kronenberg-Willems, whose father made the film, Het Parool reports.

About 90 percent of popular Dutch-language YouTube vlogs contain advertisements for products, usually in the form of the vlogger promoting the product, according to the Dutch media commission CvdM. In three quarters of these cases, it is not clear whether the video is sponsored or not, Nieuwsuur reports.

This is the first time the CvdM is investigating advertisements in YouTube videos. Late last year the CvdM ruled that vloggers are not allowed to make hidden advertisements - if a vlogger discusses a sponsored product, he or she must clearly state that.

Dutch young people would rather have a nice job with an average salary, than a boring but well-paid job, according to a survey the Utrecht University did on behalf of YoungCapital employment agency. Utrecht University questioned 3,721 millennials - born between 1980 and 1999 - from eight European countries about what they look for in a job, Financieele Dagblad reports.

Temperatures dropped below zero almost everywhere in the Netherlands during the early hours of Thursday morning. The lowest temperatures was -9.2 degrees Celsius, measured in Achterhoek, according to Weeronline. Only in Vlissingen temperatures stayed above 0. The chilly weather will last until at least after King's Day, Weeronline expects.

Motorists across the Netherlands had to scrape frost off their windshields this morning. And fruit growers had a busy night protecting their crop from the cold.

The municipality of Amsterdam calls on the Dutch government to admonish Russia about camps in Chechnya in which homosexual men are being locked up, alderman Eric van der Burg said at a protest against these camps at the gay monument in the Dutch capital on Wednesday. Amsterdam also wants State Secretary Klaas Dijkhoff of Security and Justice to change the asylum policy for Chechen LGBT men, ANP reports.

A 53-year-old Dutch man was arrested in Siem Reap, Cambodia on Tuesday for paying at least 19 underage boys for nude photos. Over 1,300 photos of naked boys were found on the man's camera, NU.nl reports

All the victims are under the age of 15 years. The Cambodian police spoke with the 19 known victims and determined that the man paid them a few dollars to undress so that he could take photos. The police believe that there may be more victims.
