A 16-year-old girl from Ommen broke both her legs in a afternoon. A van crashed into a crowd of people on the Rambla, killing 13 people and injuring over 100, including three Dutch. The other two Dutch victims are also from Ommen, RTV Oost reports.

The number of children in the Netherlands growing up in a family that receives welfare benefits increased by 2.1 percent to a total of 230 thousand last year, Statistics Netherlands reported on Friday. This number increased every year since 2012. 

More than two thirds of children who lived on welfare last year had an immigration background. Half of this group fall under the "other non-western category", compared to 39 percent in 2012. In this category the stats office includes all non-western countries except Morocco, Suriname, Turkey, Aruba and the former Dutch Antilles.

As in previous years, the number of murders committed in the Netherlands decreased in 2016, according to figures Statistics Netherlands released on Friday. Last year a total of 110 people were killed by violence in the country, ten fewer than in 2015. The victims were 76 men and 34 women.

The number of murder victims halved since the start of this century, both in men and women.

Spain was hit by two terrorist attacks. The first in Barcelona on Thursday afternoon, the second in Cambrils during the early hours of Friday morning. Thirteen people were killed and over 100 others were injured, including three Dutch, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed. Their condition is not life threatening, NOS reports.

The attack in Barcelona happened around 5:00 p.m. A van drove onto the Ramblas, crashing into dozens of people. Thirteen people were killed and over 100 ended up in hospital, including the three Dutch. The perpetrators fled.

The police arrested a man at the NPO 3FM building in the Hilversum Media Park premises around 9:30 a.m. on Thursday after he held a woman hostage there for an hour and a half. The woman is unharmed and is receiving victim assistance, the police said, NU.nl reports.

The police have thus far refused comment about the suspect's identity and motives. According to the police, he threatened a woman in the parking lot in front of the building with a knife. He then forced her into the building and held her captive, authorities allege.

A SWAT team fired several shots while arresting a disturbed and aggressive man who barricaded himself in a home on Frederiklaan in Eindhoven on Wednesday. The suspect was injured and was taken to hospital for treatment, Eindhovens Dagblad reports.

The suspect did some damage to a neighbor's home and threatened the neighbors with an axe and knife on Wednesday afternoon. He then fled into his own home, threw dozens of boxes through the window and locked himself in.

A pedagogical assistant of childcare organization Patrou in De Bilt is suspected of sexually abusing two girls. The 27-year-old man from Utrecht is currently in custody, the Public Prosecutor confirmed on Wednesday. Parents are appalled. "We are very shocked", one father said to the Telegraaf. "You trust them with your children after all. In addition, I've never had a bad feeling at Patrou."

The Dutch economy continues to grow steadily and its growth is expected to reach 3.3 percent this year, according to planning office CPB's estimate in its Macro Economic Exploration, which was published on Wednesday. If this estimate holds true, this will be the first time the Dutch economy grows by more than 3 percent since the outbreak of the economic crisis in 2007. In 2018 the gross domestic product is expected to grow by 2.5 percent, NU.nl reports.

One man was killed and two others were hurt in a stabbing in a home on Woudsterweg in Heerenveen on Tuesday night. One of the injured men is the suspected perpetrator, RTL Nieuws reports.

A 60-year-old man was killed, and a 29-year-old man was taken to hospital with unknown injuries. According to the police, they are the residents of the home in which the stabbing happened.

Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow warning stating that thick mists could cause traffic problems during morning rush hour. The warning is in effect for most of  the country.

The mist is expected to dissipate around 9:00 a.m. 

"Dangerous driving conditions due to poor visibility. Adjust speed and keep a sufficient following distance. Fog can be treacherous by sudden occurrence. Follow weather reports and warnings", the KNMI advises.

The four parties together reached a compromise on medical ethics issues, AD reports based on a draft text for the government agreement. It says that the government will not make any proposals to expand the euthanasia law to allow assisted suicide for elderly people at the end of a full life, but will make more stem cell research possible, according to the newspaper.

His decision to go through with his planned departure despite the raging f for which he partially carries responsibility, is leading to criticism from other politicians. The body of missing 21-year-old was found in a dried-up riverbed near the Turkish town of Narlikuyu, the Turkish police reported on Monday, according to newspaper AD. How the young Haaksbergen man died is not yet clear.

No trains are running between Rotterdam Central Station and Den Haag Central Station this week, due to maintenance work on the rails. The work started on Monday and is expected to take until Sunday, NS said on its website.

NS advises travelers to detour, for example via Gouda, or use the Randstad Rail. One commuter train will travel between Den Haag Central Station and Den Haag HS. Buses are deployed on some routes. 

The rail company advises travelers to take extra travel time of between 15 minutes and 30 minutes into account.

A man was found dead in a parking garage on Rubensstraat in The Hague neighborhood of Schilderswijk on Sunday afternoon. Investigators believe that he was murdered, the police said on Twitter.

The body was found around 2:30 p.m., according to newspaper AD. The police immediately launched an investigation. Around 5:00 p.m. investigators announced that a crime may have been committed.

So far nothing is known about the victim's identity.

A fire on a large pig farm in Agelo during the early hours of Monday morning killed hundreds of pigs. Two stables were completely destroyed, the fire department confirmed to ANP.

The fire started in one of the farm's two piglet stables. Firefighters tried to stop it spreading further, "but that did not work", a spokesperson said to the news wire. The fire spread to a second stable, also containing hundreds of pigs. The fire is now under control, but the fire department expects it will take another few hours to completely extinguish it.

A man was found critically injured in a car on Isenburgstraat in Breda on Thursday night. The police believe he was assaulted. The injured man was taken to hospital, AD reports.

Witnesses saw two perpetrators flee around 11:10 p.m. The car the man was found in was parked in a parking ot near the Broekakker. The car's windows were broken and its tailgate stood open.

Dutch food and consumer product safety authority NVWA denies that it first learned that eggs were maybe contaminated by toxic fipronil in November last year. The authority did receive a report about fipronil in that month, but that report only stated that it had been used to clean stables - there was no reason to believe that it could end up in eggs and pose a potential health risk, inspector general Rob van Lint said on Wednesday, RTL Nieuws reports.
