Friday was a very surprising stage. Stage 13, which was supposed to be a ‘boring’ one, became a thriller instead. It was well-known that the riders would encounter hard winds during the flat stage. Only a few teams saw the advantage of these hard winds.

Marcel Kittel won stage 12 in a man-to-man fight with Mark Cavendish. It’s the third sprint victory of the German rider from the Dutch team Argos-Shimano.

As expected stage 12 from Fougères to Tours ended in a mass sprint. What was not expected was that Marcel Kittel took the win. The final kilometer was a difficult one, with two 90 degrees curves, and most people bet their chances on Mark Cavendish.

The construction of a new stadium for Feyenoord in Rotterdam, seems not going to happen. Leefbaar Rotterdam, the largest opposition party in the city council that a decisive say in this matter, is against the plans.

The 14 members of Leefbaar Rotterdam in the council will vote on Thursday unanimously against the construction. Ronald Schneider, leader of the group in the council, announced that on Wednesday night in the television show Toggle & Van den Brink,  after the group there spoke earlier that evening about the subject.

The Tour de France is a tough sports event where cyclist can be injured badly. Stage 10 showed again the dangers of a mass sprint. Mark Cavendish and Tom Veelers touched each other and Veelers went down at 65 km/hr.

This years’ Tour is not different than previous Tours. Every year riders get injured. Broken ribs, wrists, arms, concussions and scrapes happen almost every day. With high speed the riders hit the asphalt and it is sometimes amazing that they are still alive.

André Greipel of the Lotto-Belisol team has won the mass sprint in Montpellier before Sagan, Kittel and Cavendish.

The team mates of Greipel led the German champion in such a good way that he was able, at 150 meter before the finish, the pull around his last helper and muscled towards the finish line.

Peter Sagan the Slovak super sprinter, leading the race for the green jersey, again had to take the second place. Marcel Kittel showed his good shape of this year and ended third.

Mark Cavendish of Omega Pharma-Quickstep has won the mass sprint in Marseille. His first victory in this years’ Tour de France.

The attack of six riders after two kilometers start made it easy for the teams of the sprinters to control the race. The most dangerous escapee, was Arashiro the national champion of Japan. Although the six were sometimes over 8 minutes ahead of the pack, they were never a real threat.

In the last 30 kilometers the peloton sped up and the distance between the peloton and the six attackers dropped quickly.

The team trial of Tuesday was won by Orico-GreenEdge and so, Simon Gerrans, winner of stage 3, may wear the yellow jersey on Wednesday.

Half way the team trial it looked like team Omega Pharma-Quickstep would be the winner, but Orico-GreenEdge won in the end with 1 second.

The team of top favorite Chris Froome ended third at 3 seconds and the team of Alberto Contador ended fourth at 6 seconds. Radioshack-Leopard, the team of Jan Bakelants, ended 11th and so he lost his yellow Jersey.

The third stage, and last stage on Corsica, was won by Simon Gerrans. Finally there was the mass sprint. Mass sprints always mark the first week of the Tour de France, but this year the first two stages ended differently. On Monday the 100th Tour will continue on mainland France.

Simon Gerrans the Australian cyclist from the Orica-GreenEdge team, beat Slovakian Peter Sagan in the mass sprint. The team, which was unsuccessful in last years’ Tour had, with Gerrans winning the stage, their first victory ever in the Tour.

The 100th Tour de France kicked off on Saturday. World’s number one tourist destination will not spread over the French borders this year. The 21 stages, covering up a total of 3,404 km, will not only show heroic actions of the best cyclists of the world but brings the viewers along beautiful landscapes and several UNESCO World Heritage Sites. 

Porto-Vecchio on Corsica, was  Saturday the scene for the start of the ‘Grand Boucle’. The Tour will stay on the island of Corsica for three days.
