The zookeepers of Burgers’ Zoo in Arnhem are very happy with the birth of a western lowland gorilla. The baby gorilla who was born on Thursday is the first baby of the nine year old mother Makoua, who has been a problem child.

The mother of the newly born, Makoua, was born in the zoo of Berlin and brought up by zookeepers with milk bottles. The European coordinator for the breeding program for gorillas, decided it was better to move Makoua to Stuttgart. Unfortunately this was no success and the young gorilla couldn’t get used to the other gorillas there.

This years’ most prestigious literature prize, for Dutch literature, goes to Joke van Leeuwen. She won the prize for her book ‘Feest van het begin’. The prize was handed over in museum ‘Beelden aan Zee’ in Scheveningen.

Van Leeuwen had six competitors: Martin Bossenbroek (De Boerenoorlog), Jan Brokken (De vergelding), Wouter Godijn (Hoe ik een beroemde Nederlander werd), Ilja Leonard Pfeijffer (La Superba) and Allard Schröder (De dode arm).

Clarence Seedorf is still a little embittered when he thinks about his last period at the Dutch national team. He feels unrecognized by the former national coaches Marco van Basten and Bert van Marwijk.

The 37-year-old international, who at this moment plays as a midfielder at Botafago in Brazil, shared his reflections about that period on Monday evening in the program of Johan Derksen at RTL7.

“Van Basten made a big mistake with me,” Seedorf told. “I don’t say that he was a bad trainer, but I didn’t like the way how he treated the players. Bad people management.”

The 25-year-old Hardwell from Breda is according to the DJ Mag Top 100, world’s best DJ of 2013. The organization announced this on Saturday evening during the yearly Amsterdam Dance Event.

Hardwell, in real life called Robbert van de Corput, is the youngest DJ ever to become world’s best DJ.

Right after the announcement of the British magazine DJ Mag, the young world star immediately started with playing music for the more than 20,000 attendants.

Last years’ best DJ, Armin van Buuren, also from the Netherlands (Leiden) dropped to the second place.

It was remarkably crowded at the Holwerd pier last Sunday the 15th. Over a hundred and fifty people had gathered to participate in the popular Dutch mudflat hiking. Called ‘wadlooptocht’, this recreation is a walk from Holwerd to Ameland, wading in the waters of the mudflats of the Wadden Sea. Mudflat hiking is a unique activity that only can be experienced in a few parts of Europe.

The more than 4000 monuments that could be visited last weekend, as part of the Heritage Day, have drawn 900,000 visitors, the organization reported on Sunday. 

This weekend was the 27th edition of the Heritage Day and had as the theme ‘Power and Splendor’.

So this year extra attention was given to old castles, palaces, canal houses, churches and courts. The organization chose this theme because of the celebration of 200 years of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the celebration of the 300th anniversary of the Treaty of Utrecht.

Sebastian Bowier broke the world record for biking, on a special recumbent bike, with a staggering 133.78 kilometers per hour.

The special, high-tech recumbent bike was a mutual project of the TU in Delft and the VU in Amsterdam. After a straight long track of 8km, the world record time was measured along a 200m track.
