French language film Elle by Dutch director Paul Verhoeven won two Golden Globes on Sunday. It won the prize in the category of best foreign film and leading actress Isabelle Huppert won the best actress prize, the Volkskrant reports.

Elle is a psychological thriller based on  Philippe Djian's novel Oh.  The story is about a woman's hunt for the man who raped her in her home in Paris.

Dutch actor Michiel Huisman, known for his portrayal of Daario Naharis in Game of Thrones, was named te Most Handsome Face of 2016 by video platform TC Candler. 

TC Candler released a video of the 100 most handsome faces of last year. Second place went to musician TaeYang and Swedish actor Alexander Skarsgard came in third. Other handsome faces on the list included Kit Harington, Fernando Alonso and Tom Hiddleston.

The list was compiled by nominations from TC Candler users. An independent jury selected the top 100 most handsome faces from the nominations. 

Snowball fight

Two containers filled with 50 tons of real snow are on their way to Breda for the Winterland Breda snowball fight, which starts in the Valkenberg on Thursday afternoon, BredaVandaag reports.

The snowball fight will kick off with alderman Paul de Beer throwing the first snowball. It will continue until 11:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome. Participants can also enjoy some mulled wine, hot chocoloate or craft beer from Schrobbeler, while listening to music by  De Lievelings Dj's van je Zusje.

The New Year's eve Postcode Lottery of 49.9 million euros landed on an apartment building in The Hague. That means that residents of the building with the postcode 2555VX started 2017 as millionaires, NOS reports.

The building is located on Donker Curtiusstraat in the Hague neighborhood of Loosduinen. Residents will share 24,95 million euros, half of the price money. The other half will be divided among other participants in the postcode area.

A tribute to George Michael is being organized at the Paradiso music hall in Amsterdam for January 16th. So far little is known about the concert except that it will be led by the New Amsterdam Orchestra and that the tickets will be free, but have to be booked, Het Parool reports. 

The artists that will perform is not yet known. 

Tickets can be reserved from Friday, December 30th at noon.

State Secretary Sander Dekker of Media wants to add an obligation to the new Media Law that will force public broadcasters to be transparent about costs like top salaries and football rights if politicians ask for it, he said to the Telegraaf on Tuesday.

Dekker believes that the public broadcasters' spending must be checkable because it is public money. 

The public broadcasters are against this idea. They argue that journalistic independence could be put at stake and that the information is competition-sensitive.

A massive 96 percent of children in the Netherlands celebrate Christmas. Slightly more than half think Christmas is the best holiday in the year, according to a survey done by NOS Jeugdjournaal.

94 percent of the participating kids think Christmas is fun, though 1 percent called it "stupid". The top five best things about Christmas, according to the kids, are being with family and friends, food, Christmas decorations, gifts and no school. The top two least favorite things are going to church and having to wear nice clothes.

Fireworks hotline vuurwerkoverlast.nl received over 7 thousand fireworks complaints since it opened on Saturday. This is the 5th year the hotline is active over the Christmas and New Year's holiday season.

Most of the complaints involved problems caused by firework bombs, the hotline said on Monday, according to the Telegraaf. Complaints about "irritating supermarket fireworks" came in second place.

The municipality of Amsterdam decided against placing concrete block traffic barriers to make access more difficult to the Christmas market on the Museumplein. There is currently no reason to do so, the municipality said on Tuesday evening, AT5 reports.

The proposed measure was in response to a on Monday night, killing 12 people and injuring 48 others according to the Guardian.

Dutch intelligence service AIVD released its annual Christmas Puzzle challenge. This year's challenge is 12 pages long, consisting of smaller puzzles that can be solved individually. Solutions can be submitted to the AIVD up until January 16th, 2017.

Due to the popularity of the annual puzzle - the AIVD received 16,000 submissions last year - the service this year also added an answer form, to make it easier for the AIVD employees to check the answers on the submissions. Only submissions on the answer form will be checked.

Guns N' Roses will be giving a concert in the Goffertpark in Nijmegen on July 12th next year as part of their Not In This Lifetime tour. This is the first time since 1993 that guitarist Slash, singer Axl Rose and bassist Duff McKagan will be on stage together in Nijmegen since 1993, the Gelderlander reports.

Ticket sales for the concert starts Friday at 10:00 a.m. An American Express presale is already ongoing, during which a certain percentage of the available tickets will be sold. The presale ends at 9:00 a.m. on Friday.

On Tuesday a new exhibition is opening in Amsterdam's town hall, the Stopera. The exhibition is titled Winter Wonder Wasteland. It is a Christmas installation made out of waste fished from the Amsterdam canals and the IJ river, ANP reports.

The waste collected from the canals and IJ included bottles, crisp packets, cans, snack containers and much more. All of this trash was cleaned and then turned into Christmas decorations. The exhibition will be in the Stopera for one month.

The first episode of the Dutch version of Comedy Central's Roast will be titled The Roast of Gordon, and as the title suggests, will mock Dutch singer Gordon, Comedy Central announced. The other first participants include comedian Jorgen Raymann, presenter Sophie Hilbrand and ex-porn star Bobbi Eden, Metro reports.

On The Roast the celebrity guest is comically given a hard time by his or her colleagues on the panel. He can also give them a hard time in turn. Raymann will be the so-called Roast Master, the one who has to lead the discussion in the right direction.

China is following Amsterdam's example and will soon be opening virtual reality cinemas. Chinese electronics retailer Gome Group is soon opening 100 , and teaming up with Amsterdam startup &Samhoud Media as distributor of VR films, the Financieele Dagblad reports.

Amsterdam is reducing the number street and square events during future Gay Prides in an effort to keep the crowds in the city under control, Mayor Eberhard van der Laan wrote in a letter to the city council on Friday, NU.nl reports

The city wants to spread visitors more during the week long event. For that reason, the traditional fair on Dam square will soon be a thing of the past. The organizer's permit runs out in 2019 and wil not be extended. Events will also be moved to venues outside of the city such as in Wstpoort and Tuinen van West.

It seems that Naples wants to take some of the tourists Amsterdam is often complaining about off the Dutch capital's hands. Visitnaples.eu playfully launched an attack on Amsterdam with a video comparing the two cities.

In the video, posted on various social media platforms, the Italians compare the food, entertainment and museums in the two cities, and their prices. For example, visit to Caravaggio will cost 8 euros,compared to18 euros to visit the Van Gogh in Amsterdam.

Amazon is launching its video service Prime in 200 countries, including the Netherlands, in December, Jeremy Clarkson said n Twitter. According to him "Amazon has gone global".

Clarkson and fellow presenters Richard Hamond and James May also say in a video that their new show The Grand Tour will be available to watch almost everywhere from December, according to the Telegraaf. The show premiers on Friday, and is currently only available to Amazon Prime subscribers in the United States, United Kingdom, Japan and Germany.

The 29th edition of the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdm (IDF) is kicking off in the Dutch capital on Wednesday night with a screening of Stranger in Paradise at the ROyal Theater Carre. The Dutch documentary by director Guido Hendrikx focuses on the asylum seekers crisis in Europe, Het Parool reports.

The IDFA runs until November 27th. A total of over 300 films will be screened, 102 of which will be making their world premier at the festival. The program includes 44 Dutch titles.

Michelin announced its Bib Gourmand 2017  fr the Benelux region. A total of 134 restaruants in the Netherlands got these honours, 18 of which for the first time. 17 restaurants lost their Bib Gourmand, Misset Horeca reports.

Michelin awards the Bib Gourmand title to restaurants that offers a full menu for no more than 37 euros. A total of 313 restaurants in the Benelux received this honor - 165 in Belgium, 14 in Luxembourg and 134 in the Netherlands.

A massive 198 people were arrested in Rotterdam on Saturday for wanting to protest against controversial character Zwarte Piet. Among them were GroenLinks councilor Simion Blom, lawyer Michiel Pestman and activist Jerry Afriyie.

A massive 1,075,000 people tuned in to NTR to watch the first episode of Sinterklaasjournaal on Wednesday night. According to rating foundation KijkOnderzoek, Sinterklaasjournaal was the 10th most watched program of the evening, the Telegraaf reports.

There was much interest in the runup to the first episode. Many schools and foundations were waiting to see what Sinterklaasjournaal did with the appearance of Zwarte Piet before making a decision themselves. The first episode featured both a white- and blackface Piet.

Green Day will be playing at Pinkpop next year, the American band confirmed on their website. The Landgraaf music festival takes place fromSaturday June 3rd to Monday June 5th next year. Green Day will be performing that Sunday, AD reports.

The American rockers also performed at Ahoy in Rotterdam on Sunday, during the MTV European Music Awards. On January 31st next year they will also be playing in the Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam

Dutch DJ Martin Garrix won two awards at the MTV Europe Music Awards in Rotterdam on Sunday night. He won in the categories Best Electronic and Best World Stage, NU.nl reports.

"It's unreal. I'm very happy" the Dutch DJ said after the award ceremony at Ahoy in Rotterdam on Sunday. The 20-year-old also won Best Electronic last year.
