Venlo fatal shooting a targeted attack; victim identified
The man who was gunned down on Klingerbergsingel in Venlo early on Tuesday morning was 44-year-old Kemal Zengin, friends of the victim confirmed to De Limburger. The perpetrators were waiting for him and shot him several times at close range, according to local residents.
Zengin is well known in the Blerick neighborhood. According to Duygu Oruç, city councilor for the CDA in Venlo, he was a beloved man in the local Turkish community. "He was always ready to help people. He was a very helpful man", Oruç said to the newspaper. Their fathers came to the Netherlands together, and Oruç considered Zengin as family. "In Turkish there is an expression that bad things happen to good people. That is the case here."
The shooting happened around 3:00 a.m. Local residents were woken by a bang, followed by another six shots. Police officers found the critically injured man in front of his home on Klingerbergsingel. Attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful. He died at the scene.
The perpetrators fled in a car after the shooting. No arrests were made thus far, the police said to the newspaper.
