Two suspects arrested for Utrecht man's murder
On Tuesday morning the police arrested two suspects in connection with the murder of Hakim Chengachi in Utrecht on January 12th. Chengachi was gunned down in the doorway of his apartment building on Faustdreef in Overvecht.
The suspects, a 30-year-old man from Amsterdam and a 24-year-old man from Zaandam, were arrested in their home towns at 5:00 a.m. this morning. Their homes were searched, the police said in a statement. More arrests may follow.
Chengachi was gunned down at his apartment building on Faustdreef around 1:45 a.m. on January 12th. He died at the scene. A short time later the police found a burning Audi A5 on Pallas Athenedreef. The police believe this was the gunmen's getaway car.
The police arrested two suspects a few days after Chengachi's murder. They were sitting in a car near Faustdreef and had firearms with them. When the police approached them, they sped away. They were arrested near Huizen after a long chase. According to newspaper AD's sources, Chengachi was a mistaken identity and these two suspects returned to the scene to assassinate the "right" target.
The police now say that these two suspects are still in custody, but the investigation into what they were up to is completely separate to the arrests made on Tuesday.
