Over 1000 year old skeletons found in Dutch town
Two skeletons were found on Steenweg in the Gelderland town of Waardenburg during excavation work for a bicycle path, community officer Jolanda Donkers confirmed to the Gelderlander. Based on other objects found in the ground, archeologists estimate the skeletons to be between 1,000 and 2,000 years old, according to the newspaper.
The skeletons were found on Monday. The archeologists believe that a third skeleton may be buried deeper down, they are doing further investigation on Steenweg.
Forensic investigators from the Netherlands Forensic Institute were also called in. "That was necessary to exclude a crime with all certainty", Donkers said.
As the discovery was made in Gelderland, the province will have to decide what will happen to the skeletons and other items found.
