Pastafarian blocked from wearing colander in Dutch driver’s license photo
A Dutch court denied Pastafarian Mienke de Wilde from Nijmegen permission to wear a colander on her head in the photo for her driver's license, AD reports.
De Wilde belongs to the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, which was acknowledged as an official religion in the Netherlands a year ago. Part of the religion is that followers - Pastafarians - should wear colanders on their heads. As such, De Wilde wanted to do so on the photo on her driver's license.
The municipality of Nijmegen rejected this request, stating that the picture does not meet the requirements for a driver's license. The matter ended up in court.
Today the judge also rejected the request. According to the court, there was no question of an urgent interest and De Wilde failed to prove that the Flying Spaghetti Monster would be angered by a license photo with no colander.
The Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster has its own story of creation and services involving pasta and beer. It is mostly a parody of other religions, but does have some serious undertones.
