Young Dutch people largely happy, content with lives
Most of the young people living in the Netherlands are satisfied with their lives - 90 percent of 12 to 25 year olds indicated that they were generally happy and content in a survey Statistics Netherlands did among 4 thousand young people last year.
Statistics Netherlands asked these young people about how happy they were, in general and in a number of aspects in their lives. The results show that teenagers are more content than young people - 94 percent of 12- to 18-year-olds are happy, compared with 87 percent of 18- to 25-year-olds.
The statistics office looked into which aspects of life are most connected to contentment. Appearance and mental health are important factors for both teenagers and young people. Teenagers also put great stock in their friends, while young people find their studies or work important.
The results also show that boys are happier with their appearance than girls. Nine in ten boys are satisfied with how they look, compared to eight in ten girls. Boys become slightly less positive about their appearance as they grow older. Girls stay pretty much the same.
Boys and girls are equally happy with their friends and acquaintances, rating this aspect of their lives an 8 out of 10. Teenagers are somewhat more satisfied with their social circle than young people.
