Suspect arrested for Belgian tourist's murder on Sint Maarten
The Sint Maarten police arrested a suspect in connection with the murder of 21-year-old Belgian tourist Wendy Montulet on the island this weekend, Advocate General Samuel Finielz announced in a press conference on Wednesday. The man confessed to sexually assaulting the young Belgian woman and then stabbing her to death with a shard of glass, AD reports.
Montulet disappeared on Saturday while jogging on Sint Maarten. She was found on Sunday, naked and murdered, hidden in bushes some 500 meters from the hotel where she was vacationing with her family on Sunday.
The suspect is a 21-year-old man who was born on the island. He was arrested on Tuesday based on witness statements. "Someone stated that she saw a man coming out of the bushes and acting suspiciously Saturday morning", Finielz said. The witness was able to give a very detailed description of the man, which was confirmed by other witnesses.
According to broadcaster NOS, the suspect was wearing the same clothes the witness described when he was arrested. Traces of blood were found on the clothes that correspond with Montulet's DNA.
