Newborn polar bear twins named for Dutch pop duo Nick & Simon
The names “Nick” and “Simon” were chosen for a pair of newborn polar bear twins at the Dierenrijk zoo in Nuenen, Noord-Brabant. The names were selected from over 1,000 entries in a public contest to name the bears.
Nick and Simon were selected as a combination at least eight different times, the zoo said. The names is the same as the Dutch musical act comprised of Nick Schiller and Simon Keizer.
The duo have performed together for over ten years, in which time they released eleven different albums, most of which topped the Dutch charts.
The singers were “surprised and honored” that the bears were named for them. They hope to visit the bears soon, the zoo said in a statement.
A party for the bears is scheduled for March 20 at the zoo. Organizers plan to blanket areas in artificial snow, and will set up an ice skating rink as well.
