Brabant school burns down overnight
The elementary schools De Brinck and Jan Bluyssen on Hoogzoggel in Uden went up in flames last night. The two schools are attached to each other. The fire spread through several classrooms.
Both primary schools housed about eight classes. A playgroup hall next to the property has not succumbed to the fire. The sixty firefighters had a lot of difficulty in fighting the fire. The schools' roof had to be removed and frozen water caused slickness around the building. The fire was finally brought under control around 06:15 this morning.
Residents of the neighboring apartment building had to be evacuated. There are about 40 buildings in the apartment buildings. Some of the evacuees were sheltered by family members and the rest spent the night in a hotel. The fire department was able to save the apartment building.
The fire also caused the bower in a nearby block to go out. This is probably due to a short circuit in a transformer cabin. Twenty homes are without power. Network operator Enexis is trying to solve the problem.
The cause of the fire is still unknown. According to a neighbor, some young people had been lighting fireworks at the school. No arrests have been made.
