NL to help Curaçao with drug mule jail
Within a month, Curaçao will set up a temporary jail complex for drug mules with the help of the Netherlands.
The Netherlands is giving a special lavatory for drug mules that are caught with cocaine balls in their stomachs. This measure should prevent that authorities on the island let drug mules walk; reports surfaced on Tuesday that Curaçao would let drug mules pass to Europe to be arrested here because the jail complex in Willemstad has been declared unhygienic and unfit. The reports prompted questions in the Second Chamber. Parliamentarian Ard van der Steur has called it unacceptable. A spokesman for the Prosecutor’s Office has since said that Curaçao has a responsibility to fight drug trafficking. The spokesman could not confirm whether the reports were true and giving drug mules a pass would in any way not be something the Ministry of Justice could accept. The agreement is that drug mules are arrested when they are spotted and Curaçao has a responsibility to follow through.
