Ship capt. killed in freak accident
A 56-year-old ship's captain from Leeuwarden was killed on the Maasvlakteweg in the Rotterdam harbor, Sunday afternoon, when a piece of steel fell on the cabin of his barge. His 60-year-old wife and a 45-year-old terminal worker from Ridderkerk were injured.
A crane driver was loading and unloading an ocean-bound vessel from the wharf side when the steel dropped on the adjacent barge around 14:30, for unknown reasons. First responders were on the scene swiftly, but were not able to save the captain.
His wife and the other victim were rushed to the hospital. They are out of danger.
The Inspectorate SZW is investigating the incident.
